Short story writing workshop with Sheila Armstrong – 6th Feb, 18:00

Join us at the Embassy of Ireland for a short story writing workshop with Sheila Armstrong, a Berlin-based writer and editor from the northwest of Ireland. Her short stories have been shortlisted for the Society of Authors Awards and the Irish Book Awards and have appeared in The London Magazine and The Stinging Fly. Her first collection of short stories, How To Gut A Fish (2022), was shortlisted for the Kate O'Brien Award and the Edge Hill Prize.

The short story has always had a special place in Irish writing. Rather than seeing it as a stepping stone, many Irish writers continue to work in this form for their entire careers. Together, we'll discuss what makes short stories so exciting, why they are suited to modern readers, and how using fewer words can create greater meaning. We'll also experiment with exercises to generate new ideas and leave with a better sense of our own writing voices.

"The short story is, for me, a natural form, as difficult and as easy to talk about as, say, walking. Do we need a theory about going for a walk? About one foot, in front of the other? Probably, yes." - Anne Enright
