About this event

The Bones Below / Shane Barry & the Silver South Band

Come on down to Fred Zeppelins for an incredible double bill of live music! Join us for a double feature with Cork's own The Bones Below and Waterford's 2nd best songwriter Shane Barry & the Silver South Band.

The Bones Below

Long time friends and former bandmates The Bones Below write and perform in a wide variety of musica styles. After a brief stint as a metal band in the mid 2000s, the band reformed in 2018 with the addition of piano and harmony vocals, and have been writing, recording, producing and releasing their own material ever since. There's no limits, so anything goes. HAiling from West Cork, Cork city and Laois, this accomplished 4-piece brings very different influences to the table. Taking their musical markers from rock and death metal to blues and folk, there is no area off-limits when it comes to musical expression. The full band sound is often high energy rock with thrashing drums and soaring harmonies. But equally, the Bones Below will strip back to allow for the gentle acoustic side of the band to florish. Whatever incarnation of the band you encounter, you'll be guarranteed to find people playing for the love of the song.

Shane Barry

Shane Barry is a Waterford-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer. His debut, solo album ‘Songs from the Silver South’ is the perfect summer soundtrack - representing a wide range of influences and interests. From ambient country to indie new-wave to folk-rock to the instrumental retro-dance/electronica of the album closer, Shane creates a number of tapestries to present the stories inspired by small-town living.

Subject matter includes love deliberately taken for granted (‘Love You When You’re Gone’), the cost-of-living crisis (‘This Season’s Roar’, described by Hotpress as an 'eclectic, country-inspired gem'), a lake in France, male toxicity (‘Get the Love’), the refugee crisis, and even an epic dedication to cycling legends Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche. Whereas song topics may suggest a particular style, rest assured, Shane takes his influences from Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Wilco, John Prine and 70s FM pop, ensuring that melodies are the primary driver to deliver the story and characters who inhabit the songs.

Having had previous success with the soul/indie influenced Shane Barry & the Distractions, Shane has emerged from over a decade in the academic wilderness! The pause in performance opportunities in 2020 led to a rediscovery of enjoying music and writing songs. In discussions with regular collaborator, mixing engineer and former O Emperor drummer, Brendan Fennessy, enough basic equipment was purchased to self-engineer ‘Songs from the Silver South’. Away from the time and financial pressures of the studio, the album was recorded in bedrooms, hallways and practice rooms over 2021 and 2022, while toddlers slept and neighbours mowed lawns. Drums were the only instrument engineered beyond the bedroom, performed by Brendan Fennessy. All other instruments apart from brass and cello were performed by Shane. The album was also mixed by Brendan, with Slowdive’s Simon Scott drafted in to add his magic to the mastering.

‘Songs from the Silver South’ is also available for order on vinyl, CD and digital at shanebarrymusic.bandcamp.com, as well as at all live gigs, and is released independently through Shane’s Distraction Music label.
