About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours 30 minutes

Lake Muskry is a stunning destination, well worth the hike. Situated 493 meters above sea level, it spans over 20 acres, making it the largest of the five corrie lakes in the Galtees. Formed over 25,000 years ago during the Ice Age, the lake was created when a hollow in the mountains was carved out by a combination of ice and rock.

Massive boulders were pulled from the back wall of the valley and deposited in a semi-circular ridge in front of the lake. As the ice melted, a conical hollow remained, forming a natural drainage basin. This basin filled with water to a depth of 105 feet, creating Lake Muskry, with a smaller lake, Farbrega, located just behind it.

The rocks in the area are primarily old Red Sandstone or Conglomerate, and you'll find numerous turf banks, which were commonly used until the late 19th century.

They will also go through appropriate equipment, where are good locations to walk and the benefits of joining a local hillwalking club as well as some basic safety tips.

We will meet at 9.30am and we should be back at the cars approx 1pm.

People will need to bring the following:

  • Suitable footwear. Ideally walking boots with good grips and ankle support.
  • Rain jacket and pants if possible
  • A bag for a drink and some snacks
  • An extra jumper to keep them warm plus hat and gloves.
  • Please do not wear cotton or jeans. Synthetic clothing such as leggings, football jerseys etc is the best option with a fleece. Jeans and hoodies hold moisture and will actually make you colder.
