The 'Ready To Go Orienteering' training course is an Orienteering Ireland initiative to introduce and promote the sport into schools, services and communities.
Westmeath Sports Partnership in association with Orienteering Ireland are facilitating two one day courses, one in Athlone and one in Mullingar. The course is open to teachers, disability services and other appropriate organisations who wish to include this inclusive and fun activity as part of their provisions.
Attending the one-day course along with the activity booklet and resource materials provided should give attendees the skills and abilities to teach the fundamentals of the sport to their groups.
Ready To Go Orienteering training course will enable teachers/staff to:
-Introduce pupils to the basic skills of orienteering in a fun and exciting way.
-Identify where orienteering can be introduced to the school curriculum.
-Use games and activity cards that progress pupils from classroom lessons to participation in simple orienteering competitions and events.
-Prepare pupils to compete in potential schools orienteering events.
-Organisations will receive a resource pack including extensive games cards, simple maps and orienteering controls. Online resources will also be provided which can be downloaded and printed.
- Wednesday 12th February 2025
- 10am - 3pm (including lunch break)
- Mullingar Town Park (course will be completed mostly outdoors so please wear appropriate footwear and clothing)
- FREE for teachers/staff from All-Girls school, DEIS schools or disability services
- €40 per person from any other schools/organisation
- To ensure fair spread maximum attendees per school/organisation will be 2 (unless otherwise agreed)
- Included in ticket/attendance is 1 equipment pack (10 flags, 10 punches, control cards) + a resource park (games and activities on waterproof paper
- School grounds or facility can be mapped at an additonal cost
- Unfortunately, teacher cover cannot be provided for this course
