About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Tá oíche álainn geallta leis an gceoltóir, cumadóir agus údar Peadar Ó Riada in Ionad an Bhlascaoid. Beidh sé ag trácht ar an leabhar is déanaí óna pheann ‘Ceoltóirí Chualann : The Band that Changed the Course of Irish Music’. Is duine de mhuintir cheolmhar Riada ó Chúil Aodha i nGaeltacht Mhúscraí é Peadar, mac Sheáin Uí Riada a bhí ina cheann feáin ar Cheoltóirí Chualann agus ina cheannródaí ó thaobh an cheoil de in Éirinn. Tá ceangal láidir ag an gclann le Corca Dhuibhne óir go dtugadar tréimhse ag marachtaint ar an nGráig. Labharfaidh Peadar ar cheol Cheoltóirí Chualann, ar an gcaidreamh a bhí ag baill an bhanna le chéile, agus ar a chuimhní fhéin agus é ag éisteacht leo nuair a bhí sé óg, leis seo geobhaimid éachtaint ar an leabhar iontach seo. Gan dabht n’fhéadfaimís Peadar Ó Riada a thabhairt ó Chúil Aodha agus gan nóta ceoil a chlos uaidh, agus chuige sin tabharfar pianó ceart an slí ar fad ó Chorcaigh don ócáid, agus seinnfidh sé ceol a athar agus Cheoltóirí Chualann dúinn. Is fiú go mór freastal ar an oíche eisceachtúil seo.

Peadar Ó Riada is a composer, musician, choir director, and broadcaster whose influence on Irish traditional music cannot be understated. His latest book - Ceoltóirí Chualann: The Band that Changed the Course of Irish Music - is not just a historical account of his time within Ceoltoiri Chualann, but a heartfelt tribute to the musicians who redefined Irish traditional music.

Drawing on the experiences and records of Éamon de Buitléar, Michael Tubridy, the Ó Riada archives and enriched by Seán ÓSé's anecdotes, the book looks not only at the birth of the band but also to the complexities of their trailblazing musical arrangements, showcasing their ability to blend traditional Irish music with complex orchestration.

The magic of their story unfolds against the backdrop of a changing Ireland, where traditional music is beginning to find new expression and appreciation. The book also explores the band’s creative process, featuring details of rehearsals, recordings, broadcasts and a detailed discography. It includes 400 musical arrangements and original scores in Seán ÓRiada’s hand.

O Riada, who has lived in the Cúil Aodha Gaeltacht since childhood, has contributed much to the traditional irish music scene and will discuss his achievements at The DIngle Literary Festival - this includes publishing 17 CDs of original music and composing for orchestra, radio, theater, film, and numerous traditional Irish music pieces. His liturgical music is extensively studied, and he has authored books on Sean Nós, children's stories, and music compositions.
