About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

The Outhouse Book Club returns on Wednesday, 19 March 2025 from 6-8pm in the Outhouse Library.

As 31st March is Trans Day of Visibility, this month our theme is Trans Joy. The great thing about book clubs is that they challenge you to read things you might never pick up! With that, we present to you the March Book Club pick: My Child Is Trans, Now What? A Joy-Centred Approach to Support by Ben V. Greene.

Title: My Child Is Trans, Now What? A Joy-Centred Approach to Support

Authors: Ben V. Greene

Length: ~217 pages

Description:

A gentle and informative guide for parents of trans youth. As a full-time public speaker specializing in spreading awareness and understanding of the transgender community, what Ben Greene hears most from parents and loved ones is the phrase "I'm sorry." They're sorry for using the wrong word, sorry for asking an offensive question, sorry for not knowing this already, sorry for asking a question at all. The combination of exhaustion from trans people who have become their community's designated educator and the growing trend of "canceling" anyone who says anything wrong has created a culture where people who have good hearts and minimal access to information are so afraid to make a mistake they don't even try.

In My Child is Trans, Now What?, Greene breaks the mold by offering a judgement-free guide to people across generations, from millennial parents to members of older generations who may not have had previous positive exposure to the trans community. Greene focuses on providing two key resources in this book: information and emotional support. He explains what to expect, what systems exist to support trans youth, and what loved ones can do to help. Using a combination of personal stories and experiences, definitions, and additional resources, My Child is Trans, Now What? is an essential guide for anyone looking to help trans youth thrive.

How does it work?

Once you have secured your ticket, it's up to you to source a copy of this month's book to read in time for the next Book Club session. See below for information on how you can find a copy of this month's book.

Attendance is free, but space is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot!

Tickets are limited to 1 per order. If you can no longer attend this event, please refund your ticket through your order confirmation email. Alternatively, you can contact Menzi at venue@outhouse.ie.

Where can I find copies of this month's book?
Available at Easons, Dubray, and other book stores from €20-€30. The Outhouse Library will have 2 copies available to check out, and don’t forget to check out your local library as well!

We can’t seem to find this one on audiobook, as it’s a relatively new book. As always though, you don’t need to have read the book to attend so if you’re an audiobook user please still feel free to come along for the discussion.

Book Swap:

If you’d like to join in, all you have to do is bring along a book of your choosing on the 19th of March. If you’ve already brought a book, there’s no need to bring another, you’ll still be included in the book swap.

We’ll continue this for another few months to rotate the books around, and at the end you’ll have the option to get your book back, or donate it to Outhouse library.
