Opening of River Festival & Illustrated Talk: The Current Status of Salmon in Ireland & Future Prospects by renowned international expert Dr. Philip McGinnity (UCC). This illustrated talk will give an overview of the national picture of Atlantic salmon in Ireland, with a focus on Ireland's West Coast, the Shannon River System and other significant Irish catchments. It will also review the international picture: salmon in an Irish context versus other significant European and North Atlantic catchments. It will outline past and current genetics research in an Irish context and what this research tells us. It will review barriers on Irish rivers and perspectives on addressing passage, and what's in it for salmon. It will also review other perspectives on fish population genetics (salmon biology, ecology, genetics, evolutionary biology, supporting freshwater habitat, etc.). The talk by Dr. Philip McGinnity will be followed by a short panel discussion including representatives of the Restore Ballymacraven River Association, the Castleconnell River Association, IFI and LAWPRO. It will include a Q&A session, and a discussion on the practical steps local community groups can undertake to improve the ecological conditions and status of salmon in their local rivers and streams, including measures to support salmonid nurseries and spawning grounds.
