According to legend, the Basilica of St Mary Major was built in the 4th century AD after the Pope and a Roman nobleman named Giovanni dreamt of the Virgin Mary asking for a place of worship. On the morning of 5 August 354, they discovered that a miracle had marked the place at the top of one of the Seven Hills: the Esquiline, whose summit was in fact covered in snow!
But the Esquiline, now covered by late 19th century buildings, hides many other treasures: in the churches of Santa Pudenziana and Santa Prassede there are early Christian and medieval mosaics that are themselves worth a visit!
The virtual visit, in English, will be held on Zoom.
Reservation on ZOOM required here, limited places.
