What You’ll Learn:

– **Introduction to Joomchi**: Discover the fascinating history and cultural significance of joomchi.

– **Hands-On Technique**: Learn the process of transforming Korean mulberry paper, or hanji, into organic, leather-like forms. You’ll wet, grip, stretch, and manipulate the paper until the fibers break down and felt to your liking.

– **Creating Mixed Media Art**: Explore how to incorporate fibers, strings and other papers to create your own special mixed media joomchi art.

The process is incredibly therapeutic. Hours of manipulating the paper can feel like a meditative journey, relieving years of angst and culminating in a major transformation. Flat sheets of hanji become living, breathing pieces of art without using any adhesives—just the power of your hands and creativity.

Frequently asked questions

What is Joomchi?

Joomchi is a traditional Korean art form that involves the manipulation and felting of mulberry paper. By repeatedly wetting, layering, and agitating the paper, artists create textured, durable, and often translucent sheets that can be sculpted into various forms.

How do you go about making Joomchi?

It’s easier to try with your own hands than to explain in words…but here it goes. At least 2 layers of Korean mulberry paper, or hanji, are first wet, then, aggressively gripped, grabbed, stretched, and manipulated until the fibers are broken down and “felted” to your liking.
