"Is it possible to verify something of the relation of the subject to the analytic cause? Such was my hypothesis, and it was verified in a precise manner. Through the indirect procedure of confession - if we may say so – of an analysand to other analysand passers, the authenticity of the subject’s relation to the analysis can be assured. The engagement of the subject in his analysis can be verified, and the certainty that the unconscious exists can be affirmed. This was Freud’s criterion in the first instance. He said one could not participate in the analytic cause without being convinced of the existence of the unconscious..."
