About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

Join the LINC Team and Melanie Boyle for an insightful webinar on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Communication Boards in the Early Years.

Melanie Boyle, an experienced AAC Coach and SEN teacher, has been profoundly influenced by her journey as a mother to an AAC user. She advocates for the principle that being non-speaking does not mean having nothing to say. With both expertise and empathy, she is committed to fostering inclusive communication in all settings, equipping practitioners and parents with the knowledge and tools to create language-rich environments where all children can connect, express themselves, and thrive through AAC.

In this webinar, Melanie will introduce Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)—a range of tools and strategies designed to support young children who have difficulty using speech. In early years settings, AAC plays a crucial role in developing language skills, fostering social interaction, and encouraging self-expression. It includes both low-tech options, such as communication boards and picture symbols, and high-tech solutions, such as speech-generating devices and tablet-based apps. When introduced early, AAC helps bridge communication gaps, giving young children the tools they need to connect, learn, and thrive.

This informative session will provide attendees with practical strategies to introduce AAC in early years settings, focusing on communication boards as a bridge to meaningful interactions. Attendees will learn how to seamlessly integrate AAC into daily routines, support language development, and encourage genuine communication—moving beyond simple requests or choice-making.

The session will also introduce free go-to resources and training opportunities to support ongoing AAC implementation in the early years.
