The first session in the Foundations of Data Science II training is an Applied Mathematics day by Dr Michelle Carey, UCD, & Prof Subhrakanti Dey, MU.
In the AM, Dr Michelle Carey, UCD will present on "Uncertainty Quantification" , wrapping up with a hands-on session before lunch. Please ensure you carry a laptop with you for the session.
In the PM, Prof Subhrakanti Dey, Maynooth University will discuss an"Introduction to Statistical Estimation Theory
Abstract
Statistical estimation algorithms are used in a multitude of applications in global positioning systems, channel parameter estimation in wireless communication systems, biological applications, object tracking and automatic control systems. Similarly, statistical detection algorithms are used in anomaly and intrusion detection, detecting changes in environmental (such as pollution levels) and infrastructure monitoring applications, and surveillance.
In this lecture, we will cover basic aspects of statistical detection such as Bayesian Neyman-Pearson detection algorithms, linear minimum mean square error estimation (MMSE) algorithms, state estimation algorithms such as Kalman filtering, and hidden Markov models.
