About this event

This is the third of a series of engagement events on the new National Centre for Research and Remembrance (NCRR). It will be held in The Clayton Hotel, Cork City, 19 November 2024 between 12.30 and 5pm.

The event is being held so that survivors and affected people, and their family members and advocates, can hear about and feedback on the work of the National Archives and National Museum on the National Centre for Research and Remembrance.

To reserve your place at the event: Please click on the 'Reserve a spot' button. When you do so, you'll be asked to specify any accessibility or dietary requirements - this is to make sure all attendees are accommodated on the day.

The purpose of this engagement event is to deliver on the National Centre for Research and Remembrance Steering Group’s commitments, published in May of this year, following the initial consultation on the National Centre. Those commitments relate to:

  • Survivor-centred - decision-making and co-creation
  • Equal and inclusive memorialisation
  • An engaging, authentic and professional museum experience
  • Truth, healing and support
  • Treatment of records
  • A calm and reflective garden space

Further information on the consultation and commitments is available at www.gov.ie/nationalcentre

Within these core commitments, the next steps included a series of interactive in-person sessions for survivors and former residents Industrial Schools, Magdalen Laundries, Mother and Baby and County Home Institutions, Reformatories, and related institutions, as well as their families and advocates.

This event will be run by the National Museum of Ireland (NMI) and National Archives (NAI), supported by the Special Advocate for Survivors.

The event will include:

  • a welcome and introduction from the Special Advocate for Survivors;
  • a presentation from the Office of Public Works on the development of the NCRR site;
  • a presentation and interactive feedback session on the National Archives’ work on developing the archival repository; and
  • a presentation and interactive feedback session on the National Museum of Ireland’s research on survivor-focused museums as examples of survivor-led exhibition and memorialisation spaces.

Each presentation will be followed by time for attendees to ask questions and share their feedback. Representatives from the National Archives, National Museum and Special Advocate’s office will also be available during and after the event to speak with attendees directly about any questions or any other comments they may have on the National Centre.

Lunch will be provided for attendees on arrival, along with tea, coffee and water. Refreshments will also be available throughout the afternoon.

An engagement and information session was held in Dublin on 22 October, and sessions are also taking place in Galway (14 November), and in London and online on 25 February 2025. Registration for these events is now open and available at these links:
