About this event

The workshop is ideal for those interested in writing memoir or a non-fiction topic that interests them, and how these two may overlap. No prior experience is required.

What is creative nonfiction? It’s a genre that pushes the boundaries of nonfiction writing. Many writers of creative nonfiction start with memoir and find themselves branching into nature writing, cultural commentary, and hybrid forms. Equally, journalists and historical writers can find themselves starting a piece based on research and fact, but become emotionally involved in the work in a way that brings the ‘I’ into their text.

We will learn to loosen the restraints to access the right tools to tell our stories.

The workshop will run from 10am to 4pm with a fifteen minute coffee break and a 45 minute lunch break. Bring a pen and notebook, or a laptop, whichever way you prefer to write.

We will look at samples of creative nonfiction and discuss how different writers utilize the form.

There will be time to write, writing prompts, and an opportunity to share what you have written with your peers and receive feedback.

Participants will come away with a new understanding of creative nonfiction, several pieces of work written, a handout that includes a list of suggested reading, feedback on their work, and hopefully some new friends.
