Concussion: Science, Education & Policy – Building a lasting strategy for change


Join us for an engaging event focused on improving player welfare in sport and tackling the impact of concussion. Learn about the latest advancements in science, education, and policy surrounding this important issue. Our speakers will discuss strategies for creating a lasting impact in the field of concussion research and management.

This in-person event will be held at the Smurfit Institute of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin. The meeting will be chaired by Professor Mick Molloy and guest speaker Professor Claire Bryant from the University of Cambridge will present on 'Development of new biomarkers for brain injury.'

Trinity's academic and research community will contribute presentations which will include:


  • Basic and Clinical Science at Trinity College Dublin (Professor Colin Doherty, Professor Matt Campbell, Dr David Loane, and TRDA students, Trinity Institute of Neuroscience)
  • Paediatrics and Concussion (Dr Emer Ryan, Trinity College Dublin)
  • The Role of Brain Imaging (Professor Jim Meaney, Trinity College Dublin)
  • Brain Health (Professor Brian Lawlor, Global Brain Health Institiute, Trinity College Dublin)


Finally, Professor Colin Doherty, Head of Trinity's School of Medicine, will faciliate an opportunity for discussion and questions.

Professor Mick Molloy (FRCP(UK), FRCPI, FSEM(UK), FSEMI, FRCSI (Hon) UCC), University College Cork, Inaugural Dean Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (FSEM) RCPI & RCSI, Former Chief Medical Officer (CMO) IRFU & World Rugby, Director MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine UCC

Our guest speaker Clare Bryant is Professor of Innate Immunology in the Departments of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge.

Colin Doherty (MD, FRCPI, FF, SEM, DQL) holds the Ellen Mayston Bates Chair in Epileptology and is Head of the School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. He is also a principal investigator at the SFI FutureNeuro Research Centre in Dublin.

David Loane is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin.

Matt Campbell is Professor of Genetics and Head of Department at the Smurfit Institute of Genetics in Trinity College Dublin. He is also a principal investigator at the SFI FutureNeuro Research Centre in Dublin.

Dr Emer Ryan is Clinical Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics at Trinity College Dublin and Consultant in General Paediatrics at CHI, Temple Street.

Jim Meaney (MB, FRCPI, FRCR (UK), MD) is a Consultant Radiologist at the Beacon Hospital and is Clinical Professor and Director of the 3T MRI Research Centre (The Centre for Advanced Medical Imaging) at Trinity College Dublin.

Brian Lawlor (MD, FRCPI, FRCPsych, FTCD (Hon), DABPN) is the Conolly Norman Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin and Deputy Executive Director of the Global Brain Health Institute.
