About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours

CECAS will be running a day of early Autumn activities for all the family on Saturday the 28th of September from 12pm-6pm, as part of the West Cork Harvest Festival weekend.

All Day

Apple Identification & Pressing - Bring your apples from home and have them identified by our apple experts. Try heirloom varieties that you’ve never seen or tasted before! Bring your own bottles and take home some local, fresh, organic apple juice made using the Clonakilty Community Apple Press. You can even have a go at operating it yourself.

Community Smokehouse - Traditional food conservationist, Max Jones, will be running a Community Smokehouse at CECAS all day. You are welcome to bring fish, meat, cheese or other foodstuffs with you to place in the smoker and take them home with you, in exchange for a small donation. Learn all about this fascinating traditional and sustainable method of preserving food and take home some delicious smokey treats to enjoy later!

Kid Activities - We will have a kids activity area with fun seasonal & educational activities for all ages.

12pm: West Cork Flax

Kathy Kirwan will host a 90-minute interactive gathering looking at the abundantly cultivated crop of flax in West Cork and its uses past, present and future.

2pm: Tree Amigos: Wild Irish Apples

A creative workshop about wild native Irish apples, their history, folklore and uses, with illustrator Hazel Hurley.

3pm: Talk and presentation from Ger Cronin

The producer of the West Cork Honey from Dunmanway.

4pm: Talk from Cillian Boyd

We will also be hosting a talk by teacher, artist & educator, Cillian Boyd, who specialises in heritage Irish apple conservation & grafting and surveys old orchards.

Throughout the day you can also enjoy tea, coffee, cakes and snacks at our pop-up cafe, walk in the grounds or visit our on-site shops.

Feel free to bring as many kids as you can—they go for free!

Further activities will be taking place at Clonakilty Community Garden on Sunday the 29th from 12-6pm, with support from The Voice.
