About this event
- Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes
As for the title, I must admit I should like to leave out the word ‘German’ and refer instead to ‘Humanity'. Johannes Brahms
Join Dun Laoghaire Choral Society for the first concert of our 2024-2025 season.
Under the direction of John Doyle and accompanied by the Dun Laoghaire Consort, we shall be joined by the wonderful soprano Aisling Kenny and baritone Eoin Foran.
The concert will begin with Felix Mendelssohn's String Symphony No. 3 in E Minor (MVW N3), performed by the Dun Laoghaire Consort. Inspired by a family visit to Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, Mendelssohn wrote the evocative symphony when he was just 12 years old.
The String Symphony will be followed by the main work for this concert: Johannes Brahms' moving Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem), Op. 45 . First performed in 1869, Brahms began working on his requiem in 1857. It has been suggested that the work may reflect Brahms' deeply personal response to the death of his close friend Robert Schumann in 1856 and his mother in1865.
Unlike other requiems that are aligned to the Catholic Mass for the Dead, this powerful work is without doctrine while remaining profoundly spiritual. Offering hope and solace, it is thus a requiem for all of humanity.
