About this event

Housing Solutions

The AAI are thrilled to host PERIS+TORAL ARQUITECTES. Founded in 2005 by Marta Peris and José Toral, the Barcelona based practice is dedicated to researching new ways of living and building. Their work showcases exemplary, innovative social housing projects.

This lecture is presented as part of our Housing Solutions series, an exploration of qualitative issues in contemporary housing, showcasing a selection of international & Irish case studies in affordable, cooperative, experimental and social housing. With thanks to the Trinity College Dublin School of Social Work and Social Policy for their collaboration on this series.

Building + Dwelling

The conference explains the approach of PERIS+TORAL ARQUITECTES in their projects addressing the climate and housing emergency from a perspective of comprehensive sustainability.

It emphasizes the interrelationship of environmental, economic, and social aspects to develop efficient architectural solutions.

Key strategies include "increasing intermediate spaces" buildings with bioclimatic courtyards and atriums, "Reducing" materials and resources following the three R rule, and "Sharing" spaces to promote social interaction and collaborative economy.

These principles are reflected in their recent projects, seeking a sustainable and equitable balance.

Marta Peris PhD is a Lecturer in Architecture at the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB). José Toral is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architectural Projects at ETSAB, specialising in the study of public space and urban projects.

The Practice were recognised for their work at the Arquitectura Española CSCAE Awards 2022, and were finalists for the EUmies Award 2022. Their work has been exhibited in Paris, Korea, Japan and the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2016, and both their works and writing are widely published.
