This will be a conversation about Michael's work, drawing upon his own experiences growing up in Twinbrook, his experiences writing the novel, and themes of social class, political education, and representation.

Michael Magee's debut novel Close to Home was published by Hamish Hamilton in 2023. It was awarded the Rooney Prize for Literature in 2023, the Nero Prize for Debut Fiction 2023, and was named Waterstones Irish Book of the Year for 2023. In 2024 the novel also won the John McGahern Annual Book Prize.

Stephen O'Neill is a Teaching Fellow in the School of English.


The event will be held in the Neill Lecture Theatre, Long Room Hub, Trinity College Dublin.
