What is the Celtic Knot Wikimedia Languages Conference?

The Celtic Knot Wikimedia Languages Conference is an event that brings together people interested in promoting and preserving Celtic languages through Wikimedia projects. The conference includes presentations, workshops, and cultural activities focused on language advocacy and Wikimedia initiatives.

When and where is the conference being held?

The conference will take place from September 25-27, 2024, at The Tower Hotel, Waterford, Ireland. There will be an informal social evening on Tuesday 24th, followed by three full days of sessions and activities. There is a final conference dinner on Friday 27th, please see the add-on ticket option.

What is included in my conference ticket?

For in-person attendees your €35 conference ticket covers entry to the conference for 3 days and the Gala dinner on the evening of the 3rd day. Light lunch and tea/coffee breaks will be provided during the conference days. Cultural events will also take place as part of the conference.

Are there scholarships available?

Deadline for applications: 30th June In-person scholarships that cover the conference entrance fee, travel, accommodation, and meal-related expenses for recipients for the duration of the conference. Digital scholarships for people attending remotely, in the form of eSIM/data packages.

Can I attend virtually?

Yes, the conference will be streamed via a webinar and you can sign up to attend online through the free online ticket option on the event page.

What should I bring to the conference?

We recommend bringing a laptop or tablet for taking notes and participating in interactive sessions, comfortable clothing for workshops and walking tours, and an open mind ready to learn and share ideas.

Are there any travel or accommodation arrangements?

Attendees are responsible for their own travel & accommodation arrangements (unless they are in receipt of a scholarship). However, we have secured special rates at the Tower Hotel for attendees. Will the conference be recorded?

Selected sessions may be recorded and made available for virtual attendees streamed and also available to play back online after the conference. Please note that by attending, you consent to being recorded and photographed.

Can I present at the conference?

We welcome submissions for presentations, workshops, and lightning talks. Submissions are open until 14th July. Please submit your proposal through our Call for Papers on the Meta Page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Knot_Conference_2024/Call_for_submissions

The conference is open to Wikimedia editors, language activists, educators, policy makers, cultural practitioners, and anyone interested in Celtic, minority or minoritised languages and Wikimedia projects. Both newcomers and experienced Wikimedians are welcome.

Education: We partner with schools, universities, and other organisations to help people learn about and how to edit Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms and to learn about collaborative authorship, citations, presenting information from a neutral viewpoint, and how to avoid plagiarism.Events: We host workshops and edit-a-thons to add to or create new Wikipedia pages or add images to Wikimedia Commons so that we are constantly helping to expand open knowledge on Wikimedia platforms
