About this event

William Butt, cello

JS Bach: Cello Suite No 1 in G Major, BWV 1007
Garth Knox: The Little Galway Bay Suite
Einojuhani Rautavaara: Cello Sonata No 1

Butt achieves a perfect balance between spontaneity and refinement” (Gramophone Magazine)

We are delighted to return to the enchanting Casino Marino, a masterpiece in Palladian architecture on the North Side of Dublin, for two performances by cellist, William Butt. A much-admired exponent of the solo cello repertoire, Butt is a prolific performer of works for the medium by a myriad of contemporary composers, as well as the suites of Bach and Britten which he has recorded to critical-acclaim. Alongside Bach’s much-loved First Cello Suite, he presents the celebrated Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Sonata for Solo Cello, a magnificent evocation of the Baroque era. Garth Knox’s The Little Galway Bay Suite, commissioned by Music for Galway for its 2024 edition of Cellisimo, also features on the rich musical menu.

Presented in partnership with the Office of Public Works and in association with Casino Marino

The Casino was designed by Sir William Chambers in the late eighteenth-century as a pleasure house for James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont. It is widely acknowledged as the most important example of neoclassical architecture in Ireland. The Casino is operated and managed by the Office of Public Works and is only 15 minutes from Dublin’s city centre.

Please Note: Access to the building and its interior is via stairs which may cause problems for those with mobility needs.

The Dublin International Chamber Music Festival (formerly Great Music in Irish Houses) is Ireland’s longest-established chamber music festival and was founded in Castletown House in 1970. Since then, the month of June has been a musical summer must for Irish chamber music devotees. Our objective was and still is, to present concerts of chamber music, “the music of friends” in the sort of smaller, intimate spaces for which the music was originally written, away from the more formal setting of a concert hall. Over the years we have offered Irish audiences the opportunity to hear some of the finest international and Irish artists perform a vast range of chamber music in a variety of Ireland’s most historic and notable buildings, spaces that would not normally resound with beautiful and exciting music. Stately Irish Houses are juxtaposed with some of the country’s iconic, modern buildings showing the diversity of Irish architectural and interior design. From that small sapling planted in Castletown House, the great oak that is now the current Festival has grown and is recognised widely as a prestigious platform for world-class musicians.

DICMF is a non-profit making organisation and depends on the support of sponsors and Friends to continue its work into the future. It is funded by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
