EDM Fans: Not Your Average Music Fan

As our team heads to the EDMbiz Conference in Vegas this week, we’re reflecting on what an amazing year it’s been for electronic dance music (EDM) here at Eventbrite. Last July we announced a partnership with major EDM producer Disco Donnie Presents to bring EDM to the masses, and in that time quadrupled the gross ticket sales of EDM events on our platform and served EDM tickets to 28 countries. Before we head to Vegas, we wanted to share some fascinating findings about EDM fans from our recent survey–and what we at Eventbrite are doing to keep this ever-growing audience dancing even longer.

Eventbrite has been the partner of choice for thousands of EDM events, and there’s a reason for that. We understand the social nature of all events–especially relevant for EDM fans–and have continued to innovate our online sharing and recommendation tools, as well as our mobile technology to feed their social needs.

Our “Who’s Going” feature and email and mobile notifications tell fans about the events their Facebook friends are attending. EDM fans are actively sharing events on social media: over two thirds post about the event before they go, and over 60% share post-show. We’ve found that across all events on our platform, each Facebook share results in an average of $4.15 in additional revenue back to the organizer, which is no small feat.

Mobile has become a major player in the ticket game as well, especially when it comes to purchase behavior. Over a quarter of our traffic comes from mobile pages, and nearly 2.7 million people have downloaded our app, so it comes as no surprise that over half of all EDM survey respondents reported buying a ticket to an EDM event on their smartphone in the past year.

As we continue to learn about this quickly growing audience, we continue to find new, exciting ways to serve them on our platform. We can’t wait to get more insights this week in Vegas, baby! We’ll be sure to report on our findings about the EDM movement as soon we’re back.
